How do we learn language?
When we are learning our native tongue do our parents give us a dictionary and tell us to start learning words? OF COURSE NOT!!! The first thing we do is listen to language and then we try to imitate the sounds that we hear. As our vocabulary and understanding of syntax grows, we are able to carry on conversations. Once we have a larger vocabulary and our comprehension grows, we begin to learn that certain symbols put together in a particular order have meaning. We base this meaning off the language that we can already speak and as we become more prolific readers, we learn to put our own thoughts and ideas to paper.
When we learn music, we must first learn it aurally. Students cannot understand what a collection of musical symbols should sound like when unless they have heard them before.
